SET OFF ON FOOT !
If you want to reconnect with nature, meet the locals and do something good for your health, take a tour of Međimurje on foot. Roughly translated as a ‘shoe-train’, cipelcug is a popular local term for hiking. Diversity of landscape in Međimurje with interesting trails with different levels of difficulty offer a great choice for leisure hiking.
The routes were discovered by local enthusiasts—hikers who regularly walk the trails and explore new ones with the aim of making them accessible to the residents of Međimurje and visitors from around the world.
A network of twenty-two fascinating trails with a total length of 342 km is presented below. Still, the hiking options in Međimurje undeniably extend far beyond the routes listed here. Every part of Međimurje offers numerous local asphalt roads with low traffic, as well as paths through fields and forests, along with well-trodden trails along rivers, fields, and vineyards. These provide excellent hiking opportunities all year round.Due to the gentle terrain and dense population, hikers do not risk severe physical injuries, chance encounters with wild animals, or serious disorientation.
The entire region of Međimurje is covered by wireless phone and internet signals, and the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) branch in Čakovec is ready to intervene promptly if necessary.
That being said, hiking in Međimurje is at one's own risk. Every participant should be equipped with appropriate gear (footwear, clothing, walking poles, etc.) and be aware of their personal level of fitness.
Although orientation in Međimurje is very simple, even for inexperienced hikers, there are always those who do not feel confident enough to explore the given trails on their own. Bearing that in mind, the Cipelcug Hiking Association and the Bundek Mountaineering Club invite all interested hikers to join them on their hikes and leisure walks at weekends.
The most well-known hiking event in Međimurje is the Vincek Hike, organized by PD Bundek from Mursko Središće. This traditional event annually gathers thousands of hikers at the end of January.
